Naval Safety

Naval Safety has the best pictures when you go to do your weekly safety topic with your employees. I love this website.

Zillow

have you guys seen Zillow? check out how they got their name:

Once they hatched their idea, they needed a name. "Zillow" evolved from the desire to make zillions of data points for homes accessible to everyone. But a home is about more than data - it is where you lay your head to rest at night, like a pillow. Thus, "Zillow" was born. They knew they had a winning name when employees began talking in Z-language and newly-minted words starting with "Z" popped up everywhere (e.g., Zestimate™, Zindex™).

next monitor

*updated, see the 2407 compared to the samsung (same display i think) here

I have been looking off and on for the next monitor to replace the SUN GDM-5410 Sony Trinitron wonder and it just may have to be the Dell UltraSharp 2407WFP. weighing in at 14 lbs, contrast 1000:1, a 24" diagnal with .27mm pitch at 1920x1200, I think i might be able to do something with it. a little on the slow side with 16ms response for black to white. specs say very wide vertical and horizontal viewing angle. i think its got S-video in, and Picture-in-Picture. how handy. looks like its currently $629

For the budget minded, Newegg has a 22" acer for $259, this runs at the 1680x1050 like all of the other 20-22" in this category.

Web Browsers and Interesting Warnings

a while ago the speed of opera was touted somewhere on this blog. (i'd dig up the post but i have gotten tired of trying to use search this blog since it always returns nothing i want or nothing at all.) and so when i needed to be able to easily login to two different google accounts i thought of dl opera for the second account. then i can keep firefox logged in to my main google account and then log in to my other google account that is less often used on opera.

so today i went to use opera to access docs.google.com, which is the primary reason i have the second account and google rejects me. sigh... i guess it is back to ie as the second browser. but the rejection google had was interesting to read in the fine print.

oh ya... and anyone heard of/using mozilla seamonkey? i mean the name itself makes me want to use it.

Raise

I am in the process of getting a new job. YAY.... I'm transfering back to where i use to work in engineering as an engineering lead (functional lead) which means I have all the responsibility of a boss, with none of the authority, as well as all of the requirements of a normal worker. its like two jobs rolled into one with none of the glory. heres the good part, I negotiated a pretty good raise out of it. so when you guys move around (you should change responsibilites every few years to maximize pay) always shoot high and get the raises you deserve

FON upgrade to DD-WRT

I read an interesting tutorial.

It's a good thing I saw it coming and signed up for me FREE FON a few weeks ago.

A dissected La Fonera router can be modified to have an RS232 port. That looked like a bit of work.

and of course, after I finished, this reading, made a lot more sense and I wish I'd found it first.

remember: on some webpages, 1 and l look the same. not a good thing.

many thanks to the dd-wrt team for providing a modified compile for this .
