'annoy'

http://news.com.com/... is one long url and quite concerning even if it's only half true.
apparently it may now be illegal to 'annoy' somone on the internet.
i wonder if i can use this in my defense? "you were TRYING to annoy me, I now feel annoyed, so YOU are to blame!"

vista - almost old news

"... but in Vista, they are making use of the NT File System's (NTFS's) streams — attaching keywords and such to the files — to make them much easier to index and find quickly. The limitation here is that it's not a database really, just a faster way to find files using the traditional search techniques. The other limitation is that it's local PC only, whereas WinFS has the potential to work across a network, if you're using a WinFS-based server." according to http://www.microsoft-watch.com/article2/0,2180,1853593,00.asp

this talk describes something simliar over 10 years ago. interesting.

An interesting read for you science types

This article came out in March, but I didn't see it until now. "13 things that do not make sense" is an excellent summary of a bunch of scientific mysteries—everything from the placebo effect to dark matter to cosmic rays that have too much energy. It'll probably take 15 minutes or so to read it but it's worth it.

Speed of Sound

So we have all seen the basic formula for calculating the speed of sound through air. It is dependant primairly on air density. Well, it is obviously more complex and dependant on humidty and other simple factors. I have also read anecdotal stories in some physics books that it is dependant on the actual intensity of the sound itself (i.e. loud sound travels faster than quiet sound). I have never found a formula that takes into account the intensity of the sound. How loud is loud enough to observe a difference? I suspect it is somewhere around 130-140dB with very loud sounds 170-200dB traveling faster.

I have read that lould sounds are difficult to measure; they tend to blow out the human insturments for measurement and are often not sustanied long enough for the insturment to slew up to the full peak intensity. That is the measurement is limited by the slew rate of the insturment. The article I read was about high powered rifles and that they can get up into the 170dB range (ouch!).

I believe there was mention somewhere of the Navy using sonar up to 200dB and it actually killed some sea life by exploding their ear drums, maybe they know how the intensity of sound affects the speed of sound. Although the speed of sound in water is a very differnt thing than in air. I can see it now... (use a gruff voice) "Seaman give the ruskies one ping..." PING... "That should do it, they won't be able to hear anything for a while" That was probably the hight of humor duing the cold war, sneaking up an enemy sub and getting them with a nice loud (200dB) PING!

Anyway I have been distracted, other loud (read very loud) things include volcanos erupting, high caliber cannons, and Kali when I step on her. Can anyone find a formula or emperical data that details the speed of loud sounds versus quite sounds I have been curious about this for a long time but haven't found the data. Maybe the one of us who is at a University can get one of the physics grad students to take some data (ah to be able to expense a cannon to the University).

Maps, again

yahoo has a new beta version of their maps. you can do multiple waypoints. i find this useful if i want to compare the mileage of different routes. you just have to find places along the route you want to explore to tell it to go through. the zoomed out view on the upper right is also useful for moving the map focus and a glance reminds you where you are looking. kinda cool.

instant classic

Homer: Marge? Since I'm not talking to Lisa, would you please ask her to pass me the syrup?
Marge: Dear, please pass your father the syrup, Lisa.
Lisa: Bart, tell Dad I will only pass the syrup if it won't be used on any meat product.
Bart: You dunkin' your sausages in that syrup homeboy?
Homer: Marge, tell Bart I just want to drink a nice glass of syrup like I do every morning.
Marge: Tell him yourself, you're ignoring Lisa, not Bart.
Homer: Bart, thank your mother for pointing that out.
Marge: Homer, you're not not-talking to me and secondly I heard what you said.
Homer: Lisa, tell your mother to get off my case.
Bart: Uhhh, dad, Lisa's the one you're not talking to.
Homer: Bart, go to your room.

google proxy

so, you need onto a website but the library is blocking access.
consider http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/h/4807 and it's description of using google to access the page for you as a solution.
note: the graphics/files won't come through (duh, they are being served directly from the host, not the proxy...) but it may come in handy non the less.

tday, bring your armor.

I'm going paintballing wednesday night after board meeting. (we'll, actually i'm skipping out on part of board meeting to go)
500 balls are about 14$ or so at fred meyers.
so, having not even gone yet, OR purchased the balls (A friend is loaning me his gun and air) i managed to find a solution for thanksgiving.
check out my ebay bid.
i probably should have held out and got a better trigger / longer barrel, but the price seemed good. that's about 80$ less then buying it new if you DON"T count the aftermakert barrel.
I think i can get us another guy and 3 guns. anyone have one gun and mask they can bring?
i can see sarah and jen playing, but alodia will probably wimp out on us. we all have our strengths, hers is knowing what sports are worth engaging in.

Attention Catcher

it is difficult to differentiate organic chemistry articles sometimes. just browsing through tables of contents usually ends with one or two articles that i read the abstract and on average less than one article read. people do interesting things to get thier work noticed, make it seem more novel. i really liked the image this group chose to put in the table of contents along with the name in the title. mmmm pretzel.

saving money?

i am pretty sure this isn't worth my time, but the 5% match did give me pause.
keep the change

right now i have a credit card that gives me back 1% on all purchases. i purchase pretty well everything on it. keep the money to pay it off in savings account (usually try to keep it in my high interest ingdirect account) and pay off all of it when the bill comes due.

bank of america is now offering this keep the change program. when you use a debit card (like a check) to pay for purchases it rounds to the next dollar for the total purchase price and then transfers the amount needed to get to a whole dollar to your savings account. big whoop. that isn't actually an advantage. but then i saw that they will match 5% of that. so for a moment i paused and thought 5% is better than 1% but then i remembered, it is just on that change amount... we're talking pennies per transaction regardless of the total transaction amount. definately not worth my time.

I did it

It was me that screwed up the page. I was making changes to mine, and I swear I clicked to change mine, but then it said nerdy tales, so apparently I didn't get mine... oops!

I'll try to fix it. I don't know how to do the most recent comments stuff on the side though, so anyone who knows how to do that, feel free to add it in...
