turns out, a nice little ping command can be used to hang up a good old fashioned modem. (no, my modem days weren't 45 years old)wow... I wish I had known that awhile ago! my AOL days would have been even more entertaining.

I was helping a friend configure a new computer, migrate data, and get it going. turns out the cable modem did not like the new computer. I called the company, and an automated 'helper' asked if it could restart the modem, which usually solved problems. I pressed [1] - the line went dead (this was an all in 1 package with phone over cable), modem rebooted and the new machine could see beyond the modem. pretty creepy.
