canada and back

A week ago I had a discussion with my manager about my work responsibilities. The discussion didn't go so well. We weren't seeing eye to eye on much of my responsibilities. The next day I was asked to fly to Canada for a spur of the moment FAT (factory acceptance test) to conclude a 4 month demo. A Canadian customer had a unit and wanted some modifications made, and I was the best qualified that was able to travel.

This last week, I flew up and spent almost the entire week up with the crazy Canadians. (yes, I did ride a horse, and yes, the saddle fell off, and yes I did end up on the ground). The trip was an awesome success (mostly luck). I spent a day and wrote a report on the new configuration and sent it back to the factory. When I got back, the plant gave me a raise and a new job (doing more of what I want to do).

not bad for missing 2 nights of school. well worth it I think.

Sounds like your boss might have been listening, but might have been stuck as well.

Re: Casey
Still working in the same place, for the same small company. we are on about a 100% growth trajectory per year, and actually achieving more than 50%. its crazy. the new position is 'integration transfer' where I work with R&D to transfer prototype level technology into production. it actually means I work alot more with customers, sales reps, service reps, engineers and inhouse technicians to keep the technology working and advancing.

When they pitched the position to me on friday it looked doable and I agreed. on monday when I signed the onto the new position they listed about 10 additional job requirements so that will mean I will continue to alot of things at a mediocre level. they understand that and know the tradeoffs of not allowing me to focus on one thing. so thats their decision.

I got about an 8% raise. I now make 23% more than I did at GE. and i've only been gone a year. not to bad.
