over at datacent.com they have a nice listing of the sounds of failed HD's. there are some nice writeups on particular failure modes for specific manufactures and models. If you suspect a crappy drive, I would check these guys out for ideas of what to do (or to confirm it is now worth the sacred opening and harvesting of the eggs magnets)
