I ran across this while looking at a hack mode in the nokia 770. unrelated to the 770, this instead talks about virtual machines and some vulnerabilities with their implementation. one of the higher quality quick reads I've stumbled across recently.

(anyone interested in rootkits and backdoors should read this thing)

it looks like the people on offensivecomputing.net actively search for virus's, trojans and general malware and eat it for breakfast*! this is where the origional paper is hosted.

*as in probably reverse engineer/decompile it, understand it, spruce it up and then most likely deploy an even worse version. ok ok.. thats just mean if its not true, instead see what they say about themselves

Lifetime Warranty

It looks like Chrysler (thats Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep) is now extending a lifetime warranty on the powertrain. Chryslers version of the powertrain is the Engine, Transmission, and drive system. the warranty is non transferable, and the catch is that you have to take your vehicle in every 5 years for a free inspection. you have 60 days from the anniversary of the your purchase date. this is on remaining 2007, and 2008 vehicles.

the catch is that most americans do not keep their vehicles that long. if you sell in the first 3 years, the vehicle warranty reverts to a 3 year / 36k mile warranty. its not to likely a dodge, jeep or chyrsler will be on my next vehicle list, but its nice to know what they have.

Disposable Camera coil launcher

check out Jonathan Fillippi's version of the coil launcher

This is a fun and non-dangeros project for those people who like to throw projectiles magnetically. It simply works by placing a ferromagnetic projectile at one end of a coil and pulsing some power in it. The trick is to switch off power when the projectile is at the middle of the coil, there are some ways to do it but it isn't important now. The second trick is to use a coil as close as possible to projectile to maximize coupling and the third to avoid saturation, that means keeping the current not to high.
